A quick ten minute boat ride will bring you to the magical island of Lokrum, located just opposite Dubrovnik old town. Lokrum is a protected nature reserve which is only open during the day for day trip visitors and which does not have any permanent residents. Visitors come to Lokrum to relax, enjoy the nature, discover the island on foot, visit the Benedictine monastery, the botanical garden or swim in the crystal clear sea.

The fantastic setting of Lokrum island recently served as one of the filming sets for Borgia series and more famously as the Quarth, the ‘Queen of Cities’ in the famous Game of Thrones series. Game of Thrones lovers can check out the filming locations in the 15th century Benedictine monastery and the botanical garden which is filled with numerous tropical plants and roaming peacocks.

Lokrum Island has an extremely powerful and interesting legend behind it.  According to the legend, the citizens of Dubrovnik constructed a Benedictine monastery on Lokrum as thanks to Saint Benedict for saving Dubrovnik from a terrible fire. The legend of the Lokrum curse originated when in 1808 a French army general ordered the closure of the monastery and the expulsion of the Benedictines. The monks did all they could to stay on the island where they resided for centuries. When everything failed, they cursed the island chanting “Whosoever claims Lokrum for his own personal pleasure shall be damned” and left the island never to return.

The legend says that the curse laid on the island soon began to take effect. Whoever attempted to live on the island permanently was met with tragic fate.  Throughout the years the island was sold and re-sold many times but all their owners who attempted to live on the island had encountered great misfortunes.Today, Lokrum is a quiet excursion site for tourists and all these legends have contributed to the citizens of the ancient Republic of Dubrovnik keeping true to their own motto – famous and free.
